In February of last year, 22-year-old Kevin Peterson was released from a Sacramento jail after he had served only two months of his four month sentence for probation violation. Within 24 hours, he was arrested for attempted rape.
California Law Requires Release of Prisoners
A new California state law allows for the early release of low-level offenders. Due to budget constraints and overcrowding, hundreds have already been set free. The most recent ruling, according to dissenting Justice Alito, orders the release of 46,000 inmates, which is the equivalent of three army divisions.
What does this mean for you? Justice Alito summed it up when he said it was, “…gambling with the safety of the people of California.” I tend to agree. 46,000 more criminals on the street do not come without consequences.
Even though those released are low-level offenders, the risk of criminal activity is still there. Kevin Peterson is a case in point. The idea of prison being a ‘school of crime’ comes to mind, and with it the questionable effects of peer influence on inmates while incarcerated. Studies have found that even prison workers are influenced by the anti-social behaviors of inmates. How much more so the inmates themselves?
Add to this the fact that those persons fresh out of prison are often without strong support systems. Familial, financial, and social supports have often come unraveled, leaving the newly released criminals with few alternatives. Loss of job, alienation from family and friends, and the stigma that comes from having a criminal record can quickly escalate into a pressure-cooker kind of situation for the offender.
Desperate people do desperate things.
Protect Yourself with a Home Security System
I’m sure you
’ll agree that it is a perfect time to reevaluate your home or business security system. If a would-be intruder knows that you have a security system, he is unlikely to attempt to enter your home. And if he does enter your home, a security system can get help there. Fast.
From security cameras to motion detectors to glass break sensors, you can have peace of mind while the streets are filling up with early-release prisoners. Protecting your family and your business is not something that you want to take chances with.
Especially now.

You may need it now more than ever.

Thank you..really informative!!
Really eye opening post! It’s a scary thought that criminals are getting shorter sentences and are still able to commit heinous crimes. I’m in the process of installing a security system now, it’s something my wife and I have been talking about for a while. We got a few quotes but do you have any preference when it comes to systems or exactly what you need to secure a house?
Got to my ‘Home Solutions’ page – http://bestsecurityproducts.com/home/index.htm – where I write about full perimeter or basic system design. This should be helpful in determining what you need. If you still have questions give me a call. Best, Mark
