We’re right in the middle of the holiday season, which means most families are busy decorating, shopping, visiting and traveling. Because this time of year can be frantic, especially as we get closer and closer to Christmas, it is easy to get caught up in the busyness and end up neglecting our pets.
But pets need extra care during this time of year, not less. Therefore, it is important to keep their safety top-of-mind so they do not suffer from our busyness and distractedness.
The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has offers some timely Holiday Safety Tips to ensure that your pet stays safe and happy during the holidays.

1. Keep your pets eating and exercise schedule as normal as possible. Of course, there may be some variation, due to holiday activities and travel, but as much as you can, keep things consistent for your pet.
2. Keep an eye out for toxic plants. While during the rest of the year you may keep your home free of plants that are poisonous for pets, the holidays may bring with them gifts or decorations that include toxic substances. For example, mistletoe, lilies and holly can all cause symptoms that are hard on your pets if ingested.
3. Candles can post a fire hazard. If you use candles this holiday season, do not leave them unattended. Your pets may burn themselves on the candles (cats are very curious!) or they can potentially knock them over, causing a fire in your home.
4. Secure your Christmas tree. Be sure your tree is securely anchored so that it cannot be tipped over. A falling tree can injure a pet. The tree needs to be sturdy enough to withstand a cat climbing it or a dog raring up on it.
