Frequently Asked Questions

What about my pets?  Can I have a motion sensor in my home w/pets?

How long has Best Security Products been in business?  Best Security opened its doors in 1993.

How do I know this is a reputable company?  We are affiliated with the Better Business Bureau and the Department of Consumer Affairs of California.  To confirm our history with either agency, go back to our main page and review our history with either agency.

Why would Best Security Products be a better choice for me over a national company?  No voice mail!!  We believe in personal service, which includes a human voice to answer your call.  This is true for our main office as well as our monitoring station.  We are also capable of resolving your needs quickly and effectively.  If a service call to your location is ever needed, we typically will be on site 24-48 hours.  As a customer with a standard agreement, we will not charge you for service calls or trip charges.

What is the benefit of having my alarm system monitored?  An alarm without monitoring is simply  noise maker.  With the keypad and/or siren disabled, an intruder has full access and unlimited time in your home.  The monitoring gives you peace of mind in several ways.  The monitored alarm will call the fire department should a fire occur (with smoke detector option).  The system will call the police should a intruder come into the premises.  There are several built-in options regarding robbers/burglars.  Should someone follow you and force you to bypass the armed system, a alternate code can be used to both shut off the audible alarm and still call the police immediately for you.  If you are not at the premises and a burglar intrudes your premises, the system will dispatch the police for you.  In the case of domestic violence or other potential reasons without access to a phone, a keypad feature (wireless devices also available) allows you to contact the police immediately.  Another built-in option is the ability to contact the paramedics.  Should you be unable to communicate over the phone or can’t get through to the 911 system and answer questions, the system will dispatch an ambulance to you.  The monitoring station can also know the medical history of those at the premises should any outstanding conditions exist.  This is especially beneficial to those with allergic reactions to certain medicine(s) potentially used by the paramedics/doctors.

Why should I have an alarm system anyway?  If we look at statistics alone, those who don’t have a monitored alarm system are 3 times more likely to be a burglary/robbery victim.  To put it another way, roughly 4.5% of the US population is a burglary/robbery victim per year (per the Dept. of Justice 1998 statistics).  The statistics are even higher for the Western Region of the US, - 5.1% (this is 1 out of every 20 homes!).  To increase this number 3 fold, brings a premises without a system to a significant 15.3 % likelihood of a break in - this again is over the course of one year alone.  We hope you are never one of these statistics, which is why we are here.

How does monitoring work?  The alarm system has the ability to place a call through your phone line.  The alarm informs the monitoring station the nature of the problem.  In the case of a burglar alert, a person at the monitoring station will call your premises to confirm a authorized person didn’t set off the system accidentally.  If no one answers the call or gives a incorrect password, the police are dispatched.

Does having an alarm being monitored make a difference to me?  It can.  We hope no harmful situation befalls you or your premises.  A monitored system will guarantee a response to a situation which a noisemaker, commonly referred to as an alarm system cannot do.  This includes potentially reducing damage from fire, police dispatch for a break in, and paramedic response to a medical emergency.

Can a security system have smoke and fire protection?  A smoke detector can be integrated into the security system. The detector(s) will monitor constantly regardless of the armed status of the security system.  Should a detector activate, the monitoring station will call the premises to confirm the fire is not a minor problem under control by someone there (ex. burnt toast). If no one answers and/or someone needs assistance, the monitoring station will dispatch the fire department.  With 8.5 Billion dollars of property lost to fire each year, this feature is a tremendous asset.

I have children.  Can the system watch for them opening doors or windows?  This is a great feature for tired/busy parents.  The system can chime - not siren - when a contacted door or window is opened.  This can alert you to someone coming or going while you are sleeping or in another room.

Does having an alarm lower my insurance? A non-monitored alarm does not lower you insurance.  A monitored alarm will typically lower your rate 10-20%.

Isn’t a sticker in my window sufficient enough to scare off potential intruders?  Most break-ins are done by people who know something about you.  Any person who has been at your premises will know if you have an alarm system.  A professional burglar will know the difference between a scare tactic and a real notice of an active, monitored alarm system.

Does the system you provide do anything else besides protection against burglars?  The system can be used with a smoke detector to thwart any problems with smoke and/or fire.  In addition is a “panic feature”.  This feature allows you to call the paramedics (the alarm calls a station which has any health information you have given them previously) without needing to convey the problem(s) to a 911 operator.

Is there a charge for service (and/or trip charge)?  Customers of Best Security Products on a standard agreement will never be charged a service or trip charge.  This is a important question to ask, especially when receiving quotes from lesser companies in the industry.   A typical trip charge is $75.00 minimum, so a fractional savings per month will more than disappear with one call to our competitors.

What is UL listed?  Does this make a difference?  The equipment we use is all UL approved.  This agency tests for most hazards and potential problems.  A UL listed monitoring station is also important.  This is the most important question to ask when considering monitoring of an alarm system.  Do not use a company which does not use a UL listed facility!  Any company not using such a facility does not have your best interest in mind.  The differences can be more than significant.  UL requirements cover building structure, receiving and monitoring equipment, and staffing issues; in addition to installation and ongoing service.  In order to be able to provide Standards complying service, the building, equipment and staffing requirements have to be met at all times.  This cannot be guaranteed by a non-UL station, which could potentially be someone with nothing more than a computer in his/her garage.

What about my pets?  Can I have a motion sensor in my home w/pets?  We have motion sensors which are “immune” to pets up to a combine weight of 100lbs ( non-caged birds are exempt ).
