If you are moving soon, you are not alone. In the United States in 2015, out of 282,556,000 people, 40,093,000 moved. That’s about 14%.1 But all of those people are not well informed about the special considerations needed for home security when moving. Moving your belongings from one house to another can pose a security hazard if you are not in the know about how to keep yourself and your property safe.

Best home security system Coronado keys1. Change the locks on your new home as soon as you move in. This may seem obvious, but many people do not do this, and it makes you vulnerable to break-ins. Even though you may know and trust the people from whom you have purchased your home, you do not know who else has a key to the house.

2. Change your address before you move. If mail arrives at your old address after you have moved, the new tenants may have access to your personal information such as credit cards, health and insurance records and government mailings. Let the post office your address has changed, and contact the companies that may be mailing information to you.

3. Install your home security system as soon as you close on your new home. You do not want to go one day without the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your home is protected. Make an appointment with your security company to install or connect your system when you get the keys to your house, so you are protected against burglary as soon as possible.

4. Get to know your neighbors. Often, when moving into a new neighborhood, you won’t know your neighbors. Make it a priority to get to know them as soon as possible. Neighbors can be one of the best safeguards against burglaries, as you watch out for each other’s’ homes.

commercial security San Diego myths and truthThere are a lot of myths about business security out there, and what you don’t know could hurt you in the world of business security. You’ve worked too hard for your business to lose it to misinformation or oversight.

We’re exposing some of the top business security myths to make you aware of them and to set the record straight.

Myth: Business Security Systems are too expensive for most businesses to afford.
Truth: Installing a business security system does not have to be expensive. There are many budget friendly options to choose from. Having a custom system installed means you can choose only the components that you need.

Myth: Business security systems are complicated and hard to use.
Truth: Security companies want their customers to be happy with their purchases and have a good user experience, so modern systems are not difficult to learn to operate. A few simple commands and a passcode is all you will have to learn.

Myth: Security systems do not stop thieves from attempting to break into businesses.
Truth:
Given the choice, burglars would much rather break into a business without a security system than a business with a system installed. They do not want their job to be any harder than it has to be. If your business has a security system and its presence is prominently advertised, a burglar may decide to leave and find an easier target.

Myth: Security systems produce too many false alarms to make them practical
Truth: Modern technology has advanced to the point that false alarms are less likely than they were with the older systems. You can also have a system installed that makes it possible for you to turn the alarm off itself, so the authorities do not have to dispatch to your business.

Take myths for what they are: dangerous misinformation.

It won’t be long until Valentine’s Day, and that means that you may be burning more candles than usual. The The National Fire Protection Association has some timely tips for candle safety.

Click here to view the whole report and watch the video by Lisa Braxton. Here are some highlights:

During the years between 2009-2013, 25 home candle fires were reported per day, and falling asleep was a factor in 30% of the deaths associated with home candle fires.

We use candles for many different reasons, but it is important to remember that a candle is an open flame.

1. Blow out all candles when you go to bed.
2. Avoid using them in the bedroom and in other areas where people may fall asleep.
3. Use candle holders that are sturdy and will not tip over easily.
4. If oxygen is being used in the home, do not use candles.
5. If the electricity goes out, use flashlights and battery powered lighting instead of candles.
6. Never leave a child alone in the room with a burning candle.

The NFPA also offers a tip sheet here to help you use candles safely. The sheet offers the following additional tips:

• Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.

• Keep matches and lighters up high and out of children’s reach, in a locked cabinet.

• Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. 1

The tip sheet also suggests thinking about using flameless candles in your home. These candles have flickering lights that mimic the look of a real flame. You can even get some that smell like real candles. The advantage, however, is that they are much safer, as they do not use a real flame.
