Stay Low in a Fire: Tips from Travis Connelly of Expert Village

When a fire breaks out in your office or home, you may have just minutes to make it out to safety. Knowing what to do in the emergency can mean the difference between life and death.

Travis Connelly, a Florida State Certified fire-fighter, EMT and paramedic explains in this short Expert Village video explains that it is important to be able to react fast.

Here are a few highlights from the training. Please click the video below to watch.

If you are in bed when you hear the word “fire” or a fire whistle sounding, it is important to get out of bed as quickly as you can and immediately get as low as possible. The reason he suggests this is because all of the heat is near the top of the room. The floor has the coolest possible temperature. In addition, the smoke will be up above you, but oxygen will be down below.

Next, quickly find a way to orient yourself in the room. For example, feel around and try to find a wall so you have a better idea of where you are in the room. If you practice this enough before there is an emergency, you will know which direction you need to go to find the door, and you should move towards that door as quickly as possible.

Once you get to the door, be sure to check it for heat, because the fire could be on the other side of the door. If you arrive at the door and find it to be hot, you are still against the wall and are therefore still oriented in the room. You can quickly determine where the widow is and head in that direction.

Just remember that staying low is the best strategy for safety in a fire.

Having a quality fire security system in your home or business is the best way to stay safe in the event of a fire. A fire system will alert you as soon as possible after a fire has started and buy you life-saving minutes to escape.
