According to Jeff Rossen (Today.com), the smoke detector you are relying on to keep you safe, may not be adequate.

He points out that just because the burning toast in your toaster causes your smoke detector to go off, does not mean that your smoke detector is super sensitive or giving you the protection that you need. The smoke from burning food is different from burning furniture. And in fact, in a real fire, your current smoke detector may not be activated in time to save you.

The most common type of smoke detector, used in 90% of homes, are inexpensive and easy to find and rely on ionization technology. These types of smoke detectors are designed to detect fires with fast flames. However, sometimes the most deadly fires are the smoldering, smoky types of fires, and ionization alarms do not work as well at detecting these fires. They either do not go off at all, or they go off too late.

Don Russell, scientist at Texas A&M has run hundreds of tests, and set up a special test at the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. After placing 3 of the ionization smoke detectors in a room with a couch, the fire fighters ignited the couch in a smoldering fire.

Even after the room fills with smoke, the detectors do not go off until 36 minutes after the fire begins, and right before the couch is about to burst into flames.

Don Russell says this is way too late. He insists that you wouldn’t be able to get out of the room reliably if this were a real emergency.

The good news is that there is a better smoke detector available, that gives you better warning in these types of fires. It is called the photoelectric smoke detector. In another test, the photoelectric detector activated 17 minutes in with barely any smoke in the room.

The take away message is that to be fully protected in your business or home, it is necessary to have both kinds of smoke detectors: ionization and photo electric.

With 5,000 office-building fires occurring annually, prevention is key in creating safer working environments. By following foundational safety practices, the number of fires can be reduced.1

Discover Dixon has some helpful tips to decrease the number of fires in workplaces. Here are a few suggestions; click here for the full article.

In the area of preventing arson, which is the biggest cause of fires in general office buildings, it is important to keep your doors locked after business hours and to keep the area around your building well lit.

Inside the office, there are also measures to take such as keeping clutter out of hallways and lobbies and making sure that paper and other combustible items out of exits and storage areas.2

Eastern Kentucky University also offers some help in understanding and preventing office fires. In this article, EKU reports that most office fires happen between noon and 2 P.M. on weekdays, but most fire related property damage happens between 7 P.M. and 7 A.M.

commercial fire EscondidoSince overnight is such a dangerous time for property damage from fires, having a reliable fire security system is imperative. Usually, no one is in the office building overnight, so the presence of fire may not be detected until significant damage is done. A fire security system can offer comprehensive protection.

Heat detectors and smoke detectors can monitor both the temperature increase and the presence of smoke in the building. If one of these devices is triggered, your monitoring company can respond immediately. In addition, having a sprinkler system installed can decrease the amount of damage done to your property. Sprinklers can keep the fire under control so it is easier for the fire department to contain once they arrive.

Don’t wait until it is too late. Take measures today to protect yourself, your staff and your property.

- Superior nuisance alarm rejection
- Unique ability to detect all four major elements of a fire - Most accurate fire detection
- Six levels of sensitivity
- Twin LED indicators providing 360˚ visibility
- Automatic drift compensation of the smoke sensor and CO cell1

This data sheet offers answers to frequently asked questions. We’ve pulled a few from the sheet. Please click here to view the sheet itself.

What is the advantage of having a multi-criteria fire sensor?

Multi-criteria fire sensors use at least two fire signatures to verify an actual fire and reduce nuisance alarms.

Why is it important to reduce nuisance alarms?

Nuisance alarms carry a great risk and cost in buildings such as surgical centers, intensive care units, financial trading centers, high security facilities, and research and development laboratories. An unnecessary evacuation could result in severe consequences.

Which elements of a fire are detected by the fire sensor?

Carbon monoxide (CO), smoke (photoelectric), heat, and infrared (IR) light are detected by the sensor. All of these elements are common to most fires.

How long does the CO cell last?

The CO cell has an expected lifetime of approximately six years. The detector sends a signal to the panel when the CO cell is approaching its end of life and then again when the end of life has been reached, leaving the CO cell fully expended.

Is the CO sensor life span timer activated on first power up or from date of manufacture?

The CO sensor is activated on first power up. It measures accumulated time from the moment it is powered up and operating. If it is disconnected for any period, the timer stops until it receives power again.2
