In an intrusion detection system, the motion detector is a wall-mounted sensor that detects motion within the protected area, and then analyzes the motion to determine if an actual intruder causes it.

When the motion detector determines that an intruder causes the motion, it sends a data message to the system control panel for processing.

When there is no motion in the protected area, the motion detector sends a data message to the control panel, indicating that the area is in a normal, idle condition.

Users see status and alarms from the sensor at the local keypad. The control panel can also send a message to the monitoring station.

The motion detector provides some important advantages. To provide better analysis of motion within an area, we included Dual-Tec™ technology: Passive Infrared (PIR) and Microwave detection. The detector continuously supervises both PIR and Microwave channels to ensure maximum performance. Advanced dual-slope temperature compensation allows the detector to automatically compensate for background temperature variants by dynamically setting the sensor’s gain to the most effective level.

To minimize false alarms caused by air conditioners and heaters, we included the capability for automatic adaptation to environmental disturbances. An infinite rejection of disturbances caused by fluorescent lights, with a patented digital filter, further reduces the likelihood of false activations.

For more accurate calibration of the sensing regions, we included a special environmental test feature, which allows installers to check for environmental disturbances on both the PIR and microwave at the same time. For the best security against tampering, we provided tamper switches on the front cover and the back of case.

Design Considerations

Locate the motion detector on a wall inside of the protected area. For best results, locate the motion detector in a corner, or on a wall that is perpendicular to the door and windows. Avoid aiming motion detectors at moving displays, vents, or directly at windows.

The Panic/Holdup button is an initiating device that is used in a panic system, and located (concealed) under counters, under desktops, and inside walk-in freezers.

When a user activates the Panic/Holdup button, it sends a data message to the system control panel for processing.

When the Panic/Holdup button is reset, it sends a data message to the panel, indicating that it is in a normal condition. Users see status and alarms from the sensor at the local keypad. The control panel can also send a message to the monitoring station.

The alarm monitoring center can arrange for a Panic button’s message policies to contact different people for different reasons. Because the Panic Button is addressable, it not only sends an emergency message, but instead sends a “Kind of emergency.”

Intrusion Detection systems sense a number of events that indicate unauthorized entry into a facility during times when no one should be present.

In today’s facility, it is typical to include door/window position sensors, motion detectors, glassbreak detection, and panic buttons.

Solving Intrusion Issues

There are a number of critical issues that are solved with an intrusion detection system.

Unauthorized entry through doors: Intruders can open a door in many ways, including using prying tools, torches, or even an issued key to the lock. No matter how the door is opened, the door position sensor detects the opening and reports its status to the control panel for processing.

Protecting Glass Windows: Entry by breaking glass windows is a common method of unauthorized entry into a facility. Glassbreak detectors sense the sound of breaking glass, and then activate the alarm condition while the intruder is still outside, often thwarting the attempt. Finding glass break detectors that successfully sense glass breakage from different types of glass like Tempered, Laminated, Coated, Wired, Plate, and others is no longer a challenge. Honeywell offers the most effective glass break sensor for all types of glass.

Unauthorized entry through walls and roofs: Some unauthorized entries are achieved by cutting through walls and facility roofs. Motion detectors sense movement within protected rooms and departments of the building. While the Intrusion Detection System is armed, an activated motion detector causes a local alarm and sends a message to a central monitoring station.

Crisis during work hours: When intruders arrive during business hours, employees are often inhibited from using the telephone to call authorities. A panic button allows for a discrete, undetected method of calling for help. You can locate a panic button below counters and desktops to provide users with an easy, yet subtle method of notifying the authorities.
