It may surprise you to learn that 90% of burglaries are preventable. There are many things you can do to reduce the likelihood that your home will be burglarized. But even if you do have a home alarm system, adding extra layers of protection is a good idea. Here are a few tips to make your home even safer:

1. Brighten things up. Burglars like to work under the cover of darkness, so the brighter your house and property is, the better. Make sure that the areas around your doors and windows are well lit. To save electricity, consider putting security lights on motion detectors, so they only turn on when motion triggers the sensors.

2. Tidy your landscaping. Large hedges or decorative items near your house provide burglars with perfect places to hide. Trim back large plants and make sure outdoor equipment is not easily accessible; burglars can use large objects to gain access to upper story windows and balconies.

3. Get a dog. A barking dog is one of the best ways to scare off a thief. They know the barking alerts others of their presence, and a barking dog also means they may get bitten! If you are an animal lover, giving a home to a pet dog may be just the extra layer of protection you need to keep your home and family safe.

4. Beef up your door frames. Door frames for home security? Yes. Regardless of how strong your locks and dead bolts are, if you have weak door frames, a criminal can kick it in and bypass the locks altogether.

If you are moving soon, you are not alone. In the United States in 2015, out of 282,556,000 people, 40,093,000 moved. That’s about 14%.¹ But all of those people are not well informed about the special considerations needed for home security when moving. Moving your belongings from one house to another can pose a security hazard if you are not in the know about how to keep yourself and your property safe.

1. Change the locks on your new home as soon as you move in. This may seem obvious, but many people do not do this, and it makes you vulnerable to break-ins. Even though you may know and trust the people from whom you have purchased your home, you do not know who else has a key to the house.

2. Change your address before you move. If mail arrives at your old address after you have moved, the new tenants may have access to your personal information such as credit cards, health and insurance records and government mailings. Let the post office your address has changed, and contact the companies that may be mailing information to you.

3. Install your home security system as soon as you close on your new home. You do not want to go one day without the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your home is protected. Make an appointment with your security company to install or connect your system when you get the keys to your house, so you are protected against burglary as soon as possible.

4. Get to know your neighbors. Often, when moving into a new neighborhood, you won’t know your neighbors. Make it a priority to get to know them as soon as possible. Neighbors can be one of the best safeguards against burglaries, as you watch out for each other’s’ homes.

The holiday season is wrapping up.  This can be a relief after weeks of family, friends, food, shopping and joy.  While these activities are pleasurable, they can also be exhausting, and it is nice to return to a normal schedule after the holidays have ended.

Of course, with the holidays ending comes putting away all those Christmas decorations until next year. And just as it is a big job to unpack the décor for the season, so is it a big job to package it all back up again and store it. 

There are some tips that can make this process safer.  The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) has compiled a list of steps and measures you can take as you wrap up this holiday season.

1. Don’t leave your decoration up beyond the holiday season. They are meant only for temporary use.  Using them for too long may shorten their shelf life and cause them to pose an electrical hazard.

2. Your live tree is drying out a little each day.  This is normal, but combined with the electricity generated by the lights on your tree, the drying out is accelerated. Soon after the New Year, remove your live tree from your house and find a local program that will recycle your tree for you.

3.  Now is the time to ensure a safer holiday season next year.  You can do this by carefully inspecting your electrical lights for wear and tear.  If you see frayed areas, exposed wiring or cracked areas in the cords, dispose of them and buy new lights next year.  Worn-out wiring can post electrical and fire hazards. ¹
