If you have never been caught in a fire emergency, it is hard to imagine what it is like. But arming yourself with the knowledge of what happens during a fire and how best to prepare for one may save your life and the life of those around you.

The following tips are from an article published by the Department of Homeland Security. Click here to read the whole document.

When a fire starts, black smoke can fill a house within minutes. You may think that being in building fire would be bright due to the brightness of the fire. But the smoke is thick and causes your surroundings to be very dark. Even if you are in a building that you know your way around very well, you can still become disoriented and lost, because you will not be able to see.

The danger from a fire comes first and foremost from the smoke and toxic fumes that the fire produces. You may feel drowsy and may have trouble breathing. If you are sleeping, the smoke may cause you to slip into a deep sleep, preventing you from waking up in time to evacuate.

If you are in a room with a closed door, check the temperature of the doorknob before opening the door. If the doorknob is hot, do not open it. Instead, use a different escape from the room.

To help prevent a fire in the first place, consider asking someone from your local fire department to come to your home and inspect it for fire risk.

Finally, have a professionally installed fire alarm system in your home and business. Professionally installed systems can detect fire and alert you, often in plenty of time to escape.

Each year, hundreds and thousands of businesses suffer losses due to fire. These losses are both financial (as assets are lost, sometimes never being regained) and personal, as injuries and deaths occur due to the fire.

Many of these losses can be eliminated by planning ahead in the form of a fire prevention plan. When employees know what to do in the event of a fire, there will be less damage and destruction. But if your employees have not been trained on how to respond during a fire emergency, they are likely to be confused and may even make decisions that increases rather than decreases the danger and damage.

Evacuation Plan:

The first response to a fire can be panic, unless people have been trained in the specifics of what to do. Fear and uncertainty can stifle logical thinking and can impair rational decision making. But if your employees have practiced fire drills, are familiar with a written evacuation plan and have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities during a fire, they will not have to “think” much at all: they will automatically do what needs to be done to evacuate the building.

Small Fire Plan:

Many fires begin as small fires that can be easily contained if caught quickly enough. By having high-quality smoke and heat detectors in your facility, the smallest fires can be detected before they grow into a devastating emergency.

Further, if there are sprinkler systems installed, the chances of a fire growing out of control are reduced. Sprinkler systems activate only in the areas where the fire is located and can often contain and control the fire until the fire department arrives. The result is less damage and less loss.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA ) recently released an article which highlights some of the smartest way to protect the assets in retail stores.

More and more, retailers are turning to technology to help them not only protect their assets but also deliver excellent customer service. At a recent ‘innovation forum,’ several retailers came together to discuss ‘future trends” and “cutting-edge technologies.”1

As a result of the forum discussions, RILA compiled a list of some top trends in the asset protection technology.

Here are some excerpts from the article. Click here to read the whole thing.

One important trend is smart video. New technological advancements in vision and intelligence are making it possible to search information captured by and then extracted from the video. The result is that the subject’s facial expressions and even emotions can be determined. Research is also being done on technology that is able to deduce what is happening outside the range of the camera based on what is happening inside the range of the camera.

Another up and coming technological advancement has to do with biometrics, and the ability of the technology to anticipate perpetrators’ actions before they act on their bad intentions.

Predictive analytics is yet another aspect of using advancements in technology to increase asset protection in retail stores. Rather than relying on the ‘old fashioned’ way of forecasting fraud (for example by looking at older data and projecting into the future), predictive analytics peers into the future – literally. For example, a static picture of someone coming in a store could be analyzed to predict both where in the store they will go and also what their behavior will be in those areas.
