Whatever you store in your garage (bikes, your car, the Christmas tree or your deep freezer), one thing is certain:  burglars want to break in and steal from you. Lucky for the burglars but not for you, garages can be one of the easiest areas of your house to invade.

Your first line of defense is to install a Honeywell home alarm system.  This system will alert you and your monitoring company in the event of a break-in.  With sensors on the garage door and all windows, a burglar simply will not make it into your garage without you knowing it.

There are some other things you can do to prevent a garage break-in.  Do not leave your garage door open.  This may sound obvious, but crooks love crimes of opportunity.  Consider this:  you are watering flowers in the back yard and you leave the garage door open after you remove the hose.  After all – how long does it take to water flowers?  How long?  Long enough for an opportunist thief to slip in.

It is also a good idea to put a deadbolt on the door leading into your house from the garage.  That way, if a thief does make it into your garage, he will have a hard time actually making it into your house.

Finally, do not leave your garage door opener in your car.  Ever.  If a thief breaks into your car, he will have access to your home.  Consider keeping it in your pocket, your purse or on a keychain.

business security Solana BeachIf you’ve been looking for a way to protect valuable assets in your business, look no further.  Honeywell’s Wireless Indoor Asset Senor provides a way of securing your assets.

What is Asset Protection?

Asset protection is a focused security solution designed to protect specific, tangible assets. Usually these assets are things that people consider valuable, have a high probability of theft or should not be tampered with.

Honeywell’s 5870API easily affixes to virtually any valuable requiring protection within a home or business, including painting, flat screens, TVs and other electronics, family heirlooms, safes, office equipment and more.  It lets you offer an additional layer of protection that can be programmed to always be on – even when the panel is disarmed.

When affixed to the protected asset, the device will trigger a “detect” if an attempt is made to move or disturb the asset.  The transmitter is fully supervised and can send alarm, tamper, trouble and low battery conditions to the alarm control panel.

This device is an excellent solution to a problem that many businesses face:  theft.  Remember, theft is different from burglary because it occurs without a break-in and the offender has a legal right to be on the premises.  With the wireless indoor sensor, you will actually protect against burglary and theft at the same time.

Some areas that are ideal for this sensor:

If you live in an apartment, you are 85% more likely to be burglarized than people who live in one-family homes, according to the National Crime Prevention Council.  This means that in order to be safe, you need to take extra precautions when it comes to securing your home.

Use the following tips to stay safer in your apartment:

1.  Upgrade your locks.  The harder you can make it for a burglar to enter your apartment, the less likely he will put forth the effort.  Install a high-quality deadbolt and use a security bar as well.  If possible, install a metal door.  If you have sliding doors in your apartment, place a strong rod into the track to prevent opening.

2. Install an alarm system.  Alarm systems are one of the best deterrents to break-ins. If your apartment does not come equipped with a wired alarm system, give us a call to help you set up a wireless system.

4.  Plan for time away.  If you leave for a few days, ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior. Notify the post office so your mail delivery can be stopped, and be sure to close all windows and shades before you leave.   You may also want to consider putting your lights on timers, so it appears as though you are home.

5.  Use motion detectors.  Motion detectors are a great way to alert you to the presence of intruders, both inside and outside your apartment. They also let criminals know their presence has been detected, and this may be all that is necessary to scare them away.
