Home Fire Safety

Fireman

Use these tips to keep yourself and your family safe in the event of a fire:

  • Plan and practice two escape routes out of the building.
  • Plan two ways to get out of every room.
  • Discuss the plan with your family.
  • Practice escapes at night. That’s when most deadly fires occur.
  • Designate an outside meeting place.
  • Decide who will take charge of the child.
  • Draw a picture of the inside of your home.
  • Teach children to crawl under smoke and to touch door before opening them. Do not open the door if it is hot.
  • Teach children to “stop, drop & roll”. Never stop to call the fire department before leaving the building, and never re-enter a burning building.
  • Show children who live in high-rise buildings the shortest route to a safe exit. Do not use the elevator.
  • Install detectors in all sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
  • Test detectors once a month.
  • Clean the detector regularly. Dirt can lead to malfunction.
  • Replace the batteries at least one once a year.
  • Know what the smoke detector alarm sounds line and what to do when it goes off.
