Business owners lose millions of dollars each year due to shoplifting.  In fact, that figure may be as high as twenty five million dollars.  Reducing shoplifting is a great reason to take a good look at your business security plan.

Shoplifters share common traits.  For example, potential shoplifters tend to look guilty.  They may absent mindedly pick up items and put them back down.  They may also come into your business repeatedly as they make their shoplifting plans.  If you notice a customer looking at employees more than usual and looking at the layout of the store rather than the merchandise, he may be a shoplifter.

Writing for Entrepreneur magazine, Jennifer Goforth Gregory suggests that business owners, “Put out the welcome mat” to discourage shoplifters.  Here is her tip:

Shoplifters want to be anonymous and make as little contact with store employees as possible. One of the most effective ways to deter shoplifters is to greet every customer that walks into the store. “Don’t just shout “Good morning” over your shoulder, but make eye contact and greet customers like you are happy to see them,” says Chris McGoey, security expert and founder of Crime Doctor, a security firm. “Not only is it good customer service, a simple greeting can make potential shoplifters change their mind about stealing from your store because they know you can identify them.”

Commercial Camera System CarlsbadShe also suggests keeping your store well lit, eliminating dark areas where criminals are more likely to hide and steal from you. (http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/229845)

Installing security cameras is also a great deterrent to shoplifters.  If potential shoplifters know they are being watched, they are less likely to steal from you.  But if they do, having a high quality video recording of them will increase your chances of identifying them.
