If you do not have monitored smoke detectors in your business, you are vulnerable to a fire emergency many hours of each day.  This is because only monitored smoke detectors can be watched by your monitoring company.

During the day while you are at your business, your hardwired or battery operated smoke detectors offer some protection, because you are there to hear them if they sound an alert.

But what if you are not there when the alarm is triggered?  Who will hear it then and call the fire department?

No one, unless your smoke detectors are monitored.  And that is what you can have with monitored smoke detectors from Honeywell.

Commercial fire systems El CajonSmoke detectors are a logical extension to your business security system.

Whether they are installed with a new system or added to an existing one, the smoke detectors can be connected directly to the security control panel monitored by your security dealer.

When smoke is sensed at any one of the protected locations in your business, the detector will send a message to your control panel, which will then cause all the evacuation horns to sound.

The panel will then relay the emergency signal to your monitoring service where the message is received and a response made. The monitoring center may call to verify the alarm. The local fire department is then notified, so that help is on the way, whether you are at the office or away.

Honeywell offers state-of-the-art fire security systems.  Whether you need a complete system or a few components to upgrade your current system, Best Security Products can work with you to secure your business from fire and theft.

Don’t lose your business because no one was there to hear the smoke detector when it sounded.  Let us create an integrated, monitored system to protect all that you have worked so hard to build.

Every day, an average of over 200 fires happen in workplaces in the United States, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). 1

That is why it is critical to have a fire safety program for workplace fire emergencies.

Here are a few tips from the USDA for workplace fire prevention.  To see the whole list, click here.

  1. Commercial fire system southern californiaEliminate Fire Hazards:  Keep workplaces free of waste paper and other combustibles, have damaged electrical cords replaced and do not over load circuits.
  2. Prepare for Emergencies:  Make sure you know who to call in an emergency; participate in all drills.
  3. Report Fires and Emergencies promptly:  Immediately report all foul odors or defective equipment to the Building Manager or Security.  If a fire is detected pull the fire alarm station to sound the alarm.
  4. Evacuate safely:  Leave the area quickly in an emergency; use stairs instead of the elevator.  Assist your coworkers.

In this fact sheet, OSHA points out that if you expect your workers to use firefighting equipment, they should be trained on how to use it.  Therefore, if you have fire extinguishers in your office (and you should!), it is important to take time to make sure all your employees know how to use them.

But no matter how careful you are, fires can happen.  The best protection you can offer yourself and your employees is with a monitored fire alarm system.  When you invest in an integrated fire alarm system, you have the best of all worlds because you are protected from burglary and from fire, all within the same, easy-to-use state-of-the-art Honeywell system.

According to this article from the New York Times, 7 siblings died in a house fire in Brooklyn, New York.  The cause of the fire was a hot plate which warmed food while the family slept.  Due to Sabbath restrictions, the Orthodox Jewish family was unable to light a flame, so the hot plate was used to keep food warm overnight.

This tragedy is made even worse because the family could have been warned about the fire if there had been working smoke detectors throughout the home.  Instead, only one smoke detector was found – and it was in the basement.  There were no working smoke detectors on the first or the second floor of the home.

While we grieve for this family, we can also learn a lesson from their tragedy:  make smoke detectors a priority both in your home and in your business. But having smoke detectors present is not enough if they are not checked and maintained regularly.

Here are some tips from Tim Gibson of Expert Village on how to test your smoke detectors:

1.  When you push the test button on a smoke detector that is interconnected with the other smoke detectors in the house, make sure you hear the test beeps from the other detectors.

2.  Press and hold the test button for one to two seconds until you hear the series of short beeps.

3.  If you press the button and you do not hear the beeps, you may need to change the batteries, replace the smoke detector itself or have the wiring checked.
