Heat detectors are used to alert people that a fire may have started.  Unlike smoke detectors, they do not respond to smoke; rather, they are designed with sensors that are triggered when a certain temperature is reached or when the temperature rises at a certain rate.

Solana Beach fire system businessThe best places to use heat detectors are those areas in which it is impractical to have smoke detectors, such as kitchens.  Kitchens are prone to small amounts of smoke from cooking, so having a smoke detector there would be more of a nuisance than a help.  A heat detector offers protection in the kitchen, where changes in temperature may indicate the presence of fire.

Since most fires are detected more quickly by smoke detectors than with heat detectors, heat detectors are not a replacement for them; rather, they should be used as a supplement to the protection offered by smoke detectors.

Honeywell’s 5809 wireless fixed heat and rate-of-rise temperature sensor offers expanded fire detection and installation flexibility. It is ideal for hard to wire locations and applications that require more than smoke detection. With no wires to run, the 5809 is fast and easy to install.

The 5809 combines both rate-of-rise and fixed temperature sensors.

Fires typically cause a rapid rise in temperature in the surrounding area. The 5809’s rate-of-rise thermostat senses the rise in temperature and signals an alarm if the increase is 15° or more per minute.

A built-in fixed temperature sensor will also signal an alarm if the environmental temperature rises above 135°F.

Features:

  • Contains a built-in transmitter which can send alarm, supervisory and battery condition messages to the system’s receiver/control unit
  • Powered by a three-volt lithium battery. If the battery voltage gets too low, the 5809 sends a low battery signal to the control panel
  • Features a tamper switch, which causes a trouble signal to be sent to the control if the unit is removed from the mounting base

The National Fire Protection Association has released a demonstration of what happens during a home fire and how smoke detectors and fire sprinklers save lives. Watch the full video here.

Here are some highlights from the video and accompanying narration.  The home does have a smoke detector, but since there are no sprinklers installed, much of the home will be destroyed before firefighters are able to get to the home and extinguish it.

You are about to witness the awesome, deadly power of a fire and the incredible speed with which a home fire can spread. This fire has been planned:  a demonstration to show you how quickly a home fire can reach the point when everything in a room combusts and no one can survive:  Flashover.

This fire begins in the living room, where many fatal house fires start:

30 Seconds after first flame

30 seconds after the first flame, the sofa ignites.

Sofa ignites
From this point, the fire grows rapidly.  1 minute 4 seconds from the first flame, smoke begins to fill the room and then descends rapidly.  At 1 minute 35 seconds, gases flowing out of this room exceed 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

190 degrees Fahrenheit

1 minute 50 seconds the smoke alarm at the foot of the stairs sounds an alarm providing a warning before exits are blocked:

Alarm goes off

2 minutes 48 seconds, smoke pours into the dining room.  Thick black smoke moves rapidly upstairs.

Thick black smoke

Before 4 minutes have passed, the temperature 3 feet above the floor in the living room is over 500 degrees Fahrenheit.  No one could survive.

500 Degrees

Home fires are typically reported several minutes after the flames start.  Once a fire is reported, it takes time for the fire department to be notified and dispatched.

notified and dispatched

3 minutes 41 seconds, the energy in the room suddenly ignites everything.  Within 1 minute, the temperature has risen to over 1400 degrees:  Flashover!!

1400 degrees Flashover

At this point, the firefighters are en route to the blaze.  Only 2 minutes after the smoke alarm sounded, the downstairs and upstairs hallways have become impassable.

The firefighters typically arrive about 7 minutes after a fire has been reported.

The fire grows so fast, the firefighters may not be able to rescue anyone inside:

7 minutes after

The message is simple:  you cannot survive flashover. If a fire starts in your home, get out immediately and stay out.
