With 5,000 office-building fires occurring annually, prevention is key in creating safer working environments. By following foundational safety practices, the number of fires can be reduced.1

In the area of preventing arson, which is the biggest cause of fires in general office buildings, it is important to keep your doors locked after business hours and to keep the area around your building well lit.

Inside the office, there are also measures to take such as keeping clutter out of hallways and lobbies and making sure that paper and other combustible items out of exits and storage areas.2

Eastern Kentucky University also offers some help in understanding and preventing office fires. In this article, EKU reports that most office fires happen between noon and 2 P.M. on weekdays, but most fire related property damage happens between 7 P.M. and 7 A.M.

What is the advantage of having a multi-criteria fire sensor?

Multi-criteria fire sensors use at least two fire signatures to verify an actual fire and reduce nuisance alarms.

Why is it important to reduce nuisance alarms?

Nuisance alarms carry a great risk and cost in buildings such as surgical centers, intensive care units, financial trading centers, high security facilities, and research and development laboratories. An unnecessary evacuation could result in severe consequences.

Which elements of a fire are detected by the fire sensor?

Carbon monoxide (CO), smoke (photoelectric), heat, and infrared (IR) light are detected by the sensor. All of these elements are common to most fires.

How long does the CO cell last?

The CO cell has an expected lifetime of approximately six years. The detector sends a signal to the panel when the CO cell is approaching its end of life and then again when the end of life has been reached, leaving the CO cell fully expended.

Is the CO sensor life span timer activated on first power up or from date of manufacture? 

The CO sensor is activated on first power up. It measures accumulated time from the moment it is powered up and operating. If it is disconnected for any period, the timer stops until it receives power again.2

Heat detectors can be a critical part of your fire security system, and there are some important facts to keep in mind when considering their use. System Sensor has compiled a list of the top things you need to know about heat detectors.

1. The purpose of heat detectors is to safe guard property rather than life. Some areas have airborne particles from dust, steam or humidity. In these situations, a smoke detector would not be suitable. If these areas do not need to be monitored for human safety, heat detectors are a good choice.

2. The two main types of heat detectors are electronic and mechanical.

3. Heat detectors can be fixed-temperature (the most common type) or rate-of-rise. See an explanation of the difference here.

They are ideal for hard-to-wire locations and applications that require more than smoke detection. This is a fast and easy install with no wires to run.

The 5809 Series combines both rate-of-rise and fixed temperature sensors. Fires typically cause a rapid rise in temperature in the surrounding area. The 5809’s rate-of-rise thermostat senses the rise in temperature and signals an alarm if the increase is 15° or more per minute. With a built-in fixed temperature sensor, it will also signal an alarm if the environmental temperature rises above 135°F. The 5809 is UL Listed (UL 521) and CSFM approved for commercial and residential applications.

Keep in mind that heat detectors are not a replacement for smoke detectors. To be fully protected, your business must have smoke detectors, and may benefit from using heat detectors as well.
