The National Fire Protection Association recognizes the need for extra precautions during the winter months. Whether you are taking the chill off your office or your home, there are important considerations to keep in mind. Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a real threat and claims lives each year.

Watch the full video below for recommendations the Jim Pauley, NFPA President, or keep reading for highlights from the video on how to prevent Carbon Monoxide from entering or building up in your home.

From the video:

Carbon Monoxide, which is created when fuel burns incompletely, is often called the invisible killer because it is a poisonous gas that you can’t see or smell. That is why you need to make sure your heating systems are functioning properly and why having a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home is so important.
Guidelines to Follow:

1. Have heating equipment and chimneys inspected by a professional every year before cold weather sets in.
2. Clear all debris from dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace vents.
3. During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow buildup.
4. A generator should be used outdoors. Use in a well ventilated location away from windows, doors and vent openings.
5. Open the damper when using a fireplace for adequate ventilation.
6. Never use your oven or stove to heat your home.

You can find additional tips from the following website: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/winter

Don’t take chances with your loved ones. Because Carbon Monoxide is odorless and colorless, you may not know it is present. Here are some symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning:

• Headache
• Mood fluctuations
• Flu-like symptoms
• Food poisoning like symptoms
• Physical weak feelings
• Difficulty focusing
• Feeling light headed
• Difficulty breathing

A workplace fire can be a debilitating occurrence for many reasons. For the business owner, it can mean the loss of years of hard work and invested time and money. And while insurance can help with rebuilding, there are some things that money cannot buy, such as sensitive information and the time needed to replace and recreate what was lost.

For the business employees, a serious fire can mean loss of income for an indefinite period of time while the business is rebuilt – if it is rebuilt at all. Many Americans live paycheck to paycheck, so even just a few weeks with no pay can signal disaster in the form of missed mortgage or rent payments, car payments and insurance payments for displaced employees.

And of course, a business fire can seriously injure employees and customers who are in the building at the time of the fire.

Commercial fire Los AngelesHow can a commercial fire alarm help?

A commercial fire alarm will provide your business with several of the most important safeguards against workplace fire losses.

Early Detection: By detecting the fire early, you have time to not only make sure everyone has time to exit the building safely, but early detection also means that the fire authorities will arrive much sooner and stand an excellent chance of bringing the fire under control before extensive damage is done. Early detection is done via heat and smoke detectors and sirens that alert you to the fire’s presence.

Sprinkler System: Installing a sprinkler system can keep a fire under control until the fire department arrives. Sprinkler systems are triggered only in the area where the fire is located, and can significantly slow the fire’s intensity and spread.

• A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.
• Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
• Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk.
• Make sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source, such as fire places, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
• Use lights that have label of an independent testing laboratory.
• Some lights are for only indoor or outdoor use.
• Dispose of a tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried out trees are a fire hazard.
