fire protection San Diego CountyIf a fire were to break out in your building in San Diego County, how prepared are you right now to deal with it? Do you have plenty of safeguards and mechanisms in place to deal with the fire so that there is minimal or no damage to the building and all employees, tenants and customers could get to safety quickly and efficiently?

Or, have you neglected the prioritizing of fire protection safety so that your building and its occupants would vulnerable if a fire emergency occurred?

If you have neglected your fire protection safety, you are not alone. It is easy to overlook the importance of installing the right fire protection system, since many other issues of running a business seem more urgent.

The first step in improving the fire safety in your business is to understand the difference between passive fire defense systems and active fire resistance systems. Passive fire defense systems are those aspects of your fire system set up that work with no additional effort when a fire breaks out; they are always in place and operational. Their main purpose is to contain or slow the spread of fire. The components of this type of system include things like fire resistant walls and doors. This type of fire defense is important in keeping fire damage to a minimum.

Active fire protection components, however, include those components of your fire system which are either manually operated or automatically triggered when a fire breaks out. These components include sprinklers (which will trigger when a fire is detected in the area where the sprinklers are located), smoke and heat detectors (which will trigger when smoke or excessive heat is detected), and manual pull stations (which can be used when a fire has started but has not yet triggered the fire alarm system).

The best scenario for your business is to ensure that you have a variety of fire protection components in place. At Best Security Products, we specialize in fire protection systems that are customized for your unique needs. Give us a call or email us at 1-800–988–2378 sales@bestsecurityproducts.com.

If you own a boat in Southern California, then fire safety on your vessel should be a top priority. We often think of fire protection for our businesses and homes but may overlook the importance of fire safety on marine and boating vessels.

The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control has published a helpful guide to help prevent boating fires. You can click here to access the guide, but here are a few highlights from the publication:

Commercial fire systems Southern California1. Your boat’s engine can be a source of fire. Key areas to keep an eye on ae fuel lines and end fittings, to make sure there are no leaks. Also check for frayed wiring. It is normal to smell fumes while you ae fueling, but if you smell them at any other time, immediately find out the source of the fumes.

2. Never use portable electric or propane heaters in your boat. The risk of fire from these appliances is high.

3. In case a fire does break out in your boat, you will need to equipment for dealing with it. Be sure to equip your boat with a multi-purpose ABC fire extinguisher. These extinguishers can be used on many different types of fire, including flammable liquids, electrical and rubber.

In addition to the suggestions in the guide mentioned above, consider a wired fire system with smoke detectors if you own or manage a very large boat. As with any fire, early detection is critical when it comes to escaping safely. The sooner you can be alerted that a fire has broken out, the more likely you and your loved ones will have time to escape to safety.

In 2010, 16,800 reported fires involved clothes dryers or washing machines.  Of those fires, 92% were caused by clothes dryers. And the leading cause of those clothes dryer fires was attributed to failure to clean. 1

Clothes dryer fires are easily preventable, which makes the high numbers of fires even more of a tragedy.

The National Fire Protection Association has created a quick video tutorial with tips on how to prevent a clothes dryer fire.  See below for some highlights from the video.  Click the video to watch the entire presentation.

1.  When you purchase a clothes dryer, do not attempt to install it yourself.  Let a professional install it for you.  In addition, when the clothes dryer needs to be serviced, only allow a professional to assist you.

2.  Never use your dryer without the lint filter installed, and make sure you clean the lint filter after every time you use your dryer.

3.  Check the dryer drum to see if any lint has collected there.  If it has, remove it before using the dryer again.

4.  Lint buildup can cause the exhaust vent pipe to become clogged and restricted, posing a fire hazard. Check the pipe frequently to ensure it is clear.

5.  If you notice that it starts to take longer than normal for your clothes to dry, you may need to hire a professional service to clean your dyer’s exhaust pipe.

6.  Do not over load your dryer with garments; this could pose a fire hazard.

The National Fire Protection Association also has a tip sheet that can be downloaded here.  Take a few minutes to review the tip sheet and make sure your clothes dryer is not presenting a fire hazard to you and your family.  It only takes a few minutes to clean your dryer, and it could save your life.
For instructions on how to clean your dryer, check out this article on wikiHow.
